PSA vs CGC vs TAG vs BGS: Choosing a Grading Company

Updated June 14, 2026

The grader you choose affects both how your card is evaluated and what it’s worth afterward. Here’s a balanced look at the main options. Service levels, fees, and turnaround change often, so confirm the current details on each company’s own site before you submit.

PSA

The most widely recognized name, especially for Pokémon and sports cards, and graded PSA cards often command the strongest resale. The trade-off has historically been demand: PSA has at times paused or repriced services and run long backlogs, so check current turnaround before committing.

BGS (Beckett)

Known for subgrades — separate scores for centering, corners, edges, and surface — and the coveted black-label 10 (all four subgrades at 10). Popular with collectors who want a detailed condition breakdown, particularly for modern cards.

CGC

Grew quickly from comics into cards and is a common PSA alternative, often with competitive pricing and turnaround. Recognition is strong and improving, though resale can still trail PSA for some categories.

TAG

A newer, technology-forward grader that uses computer vision to produce highly detailed, point-by-point condition reports. Collectors who like transparency appreciate the granular data. Note that TAG generally will not grade cards already encapsulated by another company.

SGC

A long-standing favorite for vintage cards, valued for fast turnaround and a clean slab. Frequently chosen for older cardboard.

How to choose

  • Selling soon? Recognition and resale matter most — PSA leads for many categories.
  • Want detail? BGS subgrades or TAG’s computer-vision report.
  • Vintage? SGC is a popular, fast choice.
  • Cost and speed? Compare current tiers — CGC and others are often competitive.
